Vicky and Sam's wedding

Documentary wedding photography

of Vicky and Sam at St Josephs, Penarth

and Fonmon Castle, Cardiff, Wales.

When contacted by Vicky and Sam, I was glad to hear that it would be a varied wedding, in terms of the three different locations that their wedding day would entail. First, as usual were the Bride and Groom preps at
St David's Hotel Cardiff, then the ceremony at St Joseph's Church, Penarth, and Reception meal at Fonmon Castle, Cardiff.

Given that St David's Hotel has a great view overlooking the bay, I thought it would be good to somehow incorporate this where possible in the story, without interrupting the flow of the day, and keeping the fundamental style which is documentary wedding photography and reportage. I always try as much as possible to keep a natural flow of events. One of the first things I always say to the bride and groom is to try to pretend I am not there, carry on as you were, and be as normal as possible (which always gets a laugh). It doesn't usually take more than ten minutes for them to get used to the idea of me being there.

The ceremony sure was a full house, and quite a large church too, giving an all round better experience for everyone, including myself of course. It was also very handy when the vicar gave me the ok to move around freely, just not on the "sacred area" which I found out a bit later on during the ceremony. I knew the Vicar from a previous job where I was commissioned to cover a christening there, so that put his mind at ease as well, knowing that I'm a photographer who doesn't use flash, and a photographer that has a silent camera, so it doesn't disturb the proceedings.

From the church, the bride and groom left for the wedding reception at Fonmon Castle, one of my favorite venues, with authentic, and original works of art throughout the glorious building. With it's large open spaces on the castle grounds, it was here the couple asked me to arrange the formal family group shots, which usually takes no more than twenty minutes, but not in this case with such a large group as it was. It sure was a joyous reception with lots of photo ops given the lively spirit of the party, leading onto the first dance, and in this case there was no hesitation when it was time for everyone to join in.

Hope you enjoy the story of Vicky and Sam.
